The International Conference on Energy Conversion and Storage – 2025 will be held at IIT Madras from 27-29th January 2025. The main focus of this conference is on Electrochemical Technologies for Sustainable Development. Electrochemistry plays a pivotal role in all walks of life, such as mobility, electronics and communication, water treatment, sustainable chemistry etc. Therefore this conference focuses on electrochemical practices related to energy, environment, electrodeposition, battery recycling/repurposing, & sustainable and green practices in energy systems. This conference invites scientists, academicians, industrialists, start-ups and students working in the thematic area mentioned .
Participants can look forward to an enriched experience with expanded workshops, keynotes, and hands-on training sessions, further strengthening international cooperation in energy technology advancements.
They are crucial in the transition from fossil fuels to sustainable energy. Technologies such as batteries, supercapacitors, and redox flow batteries (RFB) provide essential means for storing power generated from renewable sources like solar and wind, which are intermittent by nature for later usage. These systems ensure a stable energy supply, balancing demand and production. Innovative alternative storage technologies, such as pumped hydro and Solar PV integration, help optimise energy efficiency and grid stability.
They are fundamental in developing and improving energy storage devices. Electrodeposition techniques allow for precise control over the material properties of electrodes, which are critical components in batteries and other energy storage systems. Innovations in this field can create more efficient and durable materials, enhancing the overall performance of energy storage devices. The ability to synthesise and process materials at the molecular level opens new possibilities for advanced energy storage technologies.
They are essential for mitigating climate change and reducing the environmental impact of energy production. The development of green fuels such as hydrogen and ammonia offers cleaner alternatives to fossil fuels, while CO2 utilisation through electrochemical processes provides a pathway for carbon capture and conversion. Integrating these sustainable practices into energy systems helps achieve a lower carbon footprint and supports global efforts toward a more sustainable and resilient energy infrastructure.
They are critical components of a circular economy, focusing on minimising waste and maximising resource efficiency. Recycling strategies enable the recovery of valuable materials from used batteries, reducing the need for mining fresh resources and lowering the environmental impact of mining and material extraction. Additionally, repurposing battery components for secondary use extends the lifecycle of these materials, contributing to the sustainability of energy systems and reducing the overall environmental burden.

About
Energy Consortium The Energy Consortium is focused on advancing India’s transition to a low-carbon energy future through global collaborations in research and innovation. Established in December 2021, it partners with industry, academia, and government to develop scalable solutions in clean energy, carbon capture, and storage. Key initiatives include research on green hydrogen, wind energy, and sustainable electrification. The Consortium also hosts educational workshops and summits, facilitating industry-academia engagement. It plays an active role in national and global forums, including COP28
About
The ECS IIT Madras Student Chapter was founded in October 2022 with a focus on skilling college students on required electrochemistry knowledge to take up research in electrochemistry-related areas such as batteries, fuel cells, sensors, electrodeposition, corrosion, electrosynthesis etc. The chapter regularly organizes workshops, lectures, and industrial visits, connecting students with academia and industry experts. Faculty advisors include Professors Kothandaraman Ramanujam, Raghuram Chetty, Ramanathan S, and Raman Vedarajan. Notable events include workshops on batteries, biosensors, and electrochemical energy storage. The chapter was awarded the "Chapter of Excellence 2023" by ECS.
Building on the success of IECS 2023, which focused on emerging trends in energy storage and conversion technologies, IECS 2025 promises to continue the momentum by expanding its scope to include even more cutting-edge research and industry collaborations. IECS 2023 brought together top researchers, industry professionals, and students, sparking discussions and innovation in areas like solar cells, fuel cells, and advanced electrochemical systems. The upcoming IECS 2025 will delve deeper into these fields while introducing new themes such as sustainable energy integration, electrosynthesis, non-electrochemical energy storage options, and advanced materials recycling. Participants can look forward to an enriched experience with expanded workshops, keynotes, and hands-on training sessions, further strengthening international cooperation in energy technology advancements.
IECS 2023 was a successful event, bringing together leading experts, researchers, and industry professionals in energy conversion and storage technologies. The conference featured 9 lectures during the pre-conference workshop, and more than 20 lectures from eminent speakers across the globe. It featured 30 oral presentations from students and 100+ poster presentations, and a Hackathon. It also featured a quiz conducted by the ECS IITM Student Chapter over the course of 3 days based on the content of the lectures covered during the day. Participants praised the event’s well-curated content, impactful keynote speeches, and hands-on sessions. Following the event, several key partnerships and research initiatives evolved, and interaction of students with foreign professors allowed them to secure internships/PhD abroad.
